Understanding Articulation in Clarinet Performance: A Survey Study

(IRB#: IRB_00200227)

This study aims to explore how people understand and describe articulation in clarinet playing. Articulation is an important part of clarinet performance, but because it happens inside the mouth, it can be difficult to observe and explain. For this reason, clarinet players and teachers often rely on spoken descriptions, metaphors, or syllables to explain how articulation should work. In this survey, we are collecting responses from adults who play the clarinet, teach clarinet, or work with clarinet players in educational or performance settings. By examining how different individuals think about and explain articulation, this study hopes to identify common ideas, differences in understanding, and areas where clarification may be helpful for teaching and learning clarinet articulation.
