Studying the Impact of Treatments for People with Carotid Artery Disease

(IRB#: IRB_00182594)

Carotid Artery Stenosis (CAS) is a condition that becomes more common as people age and can increase the risk of strokes. To prevent strokes in patients with CAS, doctors use several treatment options. These include medications to reduce stroke risk, surgery to remove blockages (called carotid endarterectomy), and newer methods such as TransCarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR), which are safer for older patients. This study wants to learn the impact of treatments for CAS on cognitive and overall health in older adults. Participants in the study will complete a total of six surveys, three at the beginning of the study and then three six months later. The surveys will be given in person with the vascular surgeon, either on paper, an iPad, or a personal smartphone.
